New castle on the horizon in Sheerness as pirate ship sets sail

Swale Borough Council is pleased to announce the refurbishment of the sandpit at the Beachfields play area in Sheerness. The galleon ship, which is currently installed, has provided great service over the past 33 years, but the area is now due to be modernised and improved.

It will be replaced by a brand new castle. Work at the site will start next week.

The new castle will have a yellow wetpour safety surfacing to match the surrounding sand, and provide access into the play area for wheelchairs for the very first time.

Whilst the site does not lend itself to wheelchair accessible items, the new play equipment has been selected the be as inclusive as possible.

The castle design won over 75% of votes at the consultation at the local primary school.

Cllr David Simmons, cabinet member for environment and rural affairs at the council, said: “The galleon ship has served children well over the past years, but it’s time for the area to have a facelift. The new castle will provide a great, inclusive area for young people to enjoy.”

The refurbishment is due for completion for Easter 2019, and will cost £50,000.
