Approval for Faversham Rec works

Thursday 13 December

Cabinet approve plan for Faversham Rec works contract

Work on the £1.9 million heritage-led regeneration of Faversham Recreation Ground will be underway by March.

Swale Borough Council’s cabinet have agreed the process for appointing contractors to carry out the works that will deliver an ambitious heritage-led regeneration of the site.

The works will begin with a major refurbishment to the play area starting in late February/early March, with new equipment chosen following feedback received during consultation with residents, schools and interested groups.

The core elements of the works are planned to begin after the end of the football and rugby season in late April and be completed by early September, with the remaining works finished in November.

The scheme was given the green light in July when The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Big Lottery Fund (BLF) awarded more the £1.6m for the scheme that will restore many of the park’s historic features, and improvements to facilities.

The funding also supports a five year action plan of community engagement which will open up the site’s history to current users, and target groups who may not have thought about using the park previously.

Cllr David Simmons, cabinet member for environment and rural affairs at the council, said:

"We’ve been working closely with the local community to develop plans that build on the 150-year history of The Rec to make sure the park will be enjoyed for generations to come.

“Local people have been involved every step of the way, and thanks to their contributions, a lot of hard work by the team here and the support of our partners, they will soon be seeing their ideas and suggestions come to life.

“There’s still a lot of work to do, but thanks to National Lottery players, we’re now able to start planning the works and creating a park local people can be proud of.”

The planned improvements and activities include:
