I was born in Brinscall, near Blackburn, in Lancashire and Educated at the Merchant Taylors' School in Crosby, near Liverpool, and then went on to train as a teacher at Matlock College of Education (Nottingham University) where I gained a distinction in Mathematics and later qualified for a Diploma in Education at London University. I also hold an MCC cricket coaching qualification.
I moved to the Isle of Sheppey in 1993 and was instantly struck by the beauty of its countryside and coastline. I joined Swale Borough Council in 2000 and was elected to represent Sheppey on Kent County Council in 2005 and again recently in 2009.
