Sea Sheppey Queenborough

Maritime festival Sat 29 & Sun 30 September

This festival is a spectacular Maritime & Heritage event It is based on many aspects of the history of Queenborough which will be brought to life by means of costume, drama, music, Re-enactors, parades, story telling, historic characters and street opera. The festival itself is the tip of an iceberg,  which involves a wide variety of workshops, activities and events leading up to the weekend. Drama workshops will be taken into schools and other organisations in which historic characters and stories are brought to life by the actors and the children are encouraged to become part of the action. Costume workshops take place for several weeks during July and August and families are given the materials and guidance to design and make their own authentic costumes. Sea Shanty Sessions are held where the shanties are not only taught but the origins are also explained. Costumed characters will be roaming the streets accosting visitors offering various “services”, begging, pick pocketing and press ganging. You may witness drunken brawls, sermons, marriage propositions, duels and more!

The results of hours of Research will be exhibited in the History tent and thousands of colourful and informative booklets/ programmes will be printed and distributed to all. A street opera based upon the most dramatic incidents in the history of Queenborough will be woven into musical drama giving plenty of scope for all to take a part whether they want a background role or more. There will be stunning parades with bands, flags and banners giant models and a host of costumed characters.

Music of all styles will be performed up and down the streets in pubs tents and street corners. Re-enactors will set up an historic encampment and show how people used to live as well as displaying their battle skills The Art Tent will enable local artists to display their talents Any organisation which wishes to have a stall to showcase their activities will be welcome and we hope to have a really wide range of other stalls trading antiques, crafts, local foods etc There will be real ale in local pubs and beer tents and local food stalls, hog roast and the superb Sea Sheppey lunch & tea tent with mouth watering homemade cakes . For the children an activity tent will teach songs and arts & crafts.
